Sandra Monterroso is the 2025 winner of the MAZORCA grant for international artistic mobility.

For the 3rd consecutive year, MAZORCA launched a national call for professional visual artists wishing to undertake an artistic residency in Paris.

The winner of this edition, Sandra Monterroso, was selected by two juries: first, by the MAZORCA jury, among 70 artists from Guatemala; then, by the jury convened by the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, among more than 140 international projects. Only 4 artists from the Americas (North, Central, South America, and the Caribbean) were selected this year.

Additionally, Sandra will enjoy a full grant to conduct artistic research for three months, from July to October 2025. Her project will focus on the manuscript of the Paris Codex, whose original is housed in the National Library of France.
This residency will be accompanied by Christina Chirouze Montenegro, curator and founder of MAZORCA.

Por 3er año consecutivo, MAZORCA lanzó una convocatoria nacional para artistas visuales profesionales que desearan realizar una residencia artística en París.

La ganadora de esta edición, Sandra Monterroso, fue seleccionada por dos jurados: primero, por el de MAZORCA, entre 70 artistas de Guatemala; luego, por el jurado convocado por la Cité Internationale des Arts de París, entre más de 140 proyectos internacionales. Solo 4 artistas de las Américas (Norte, Centro, Suramérica y Caribe) fueron seleccionados este año.

Asimismo, Sandra podrá gozar de una beca completa para realizar una investigación artística durante tres meses, de julio a octubre 2025. Su proyecto estará centrado en el manuscrito del Códice de París, cuyo original se encuentra resguardado en la Biblioteca Nacional de Francia.

Esta residencia contará con el acompañamiento de Christina Chirouze Montenegro, curadora y fundadora de MAZORCA.

Zielinsky presents 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘵𝘢𝘳é 𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘫𝘰𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵, a group exhibition. Starting on November 28th at our space in Barcelona.

The act of weaving involves a movement of the body (or machines) that guides the material into a network, where layers and levels overlap and mix. But not only the material is involved in the act of weaving, the act goes beyond a purely material question. The rhythm of the weave leads to a series of stories, oral traditions, inheritances and knowledge shared between generations. Labor, social issues, leisure, gender, what is above and what is below, are mixed in different ways in this set of works: from the action of weaving using natural fibers to the use of photographic printing techniques.

El acto de tejer implica un movimiento del cuerpo (o de las máquinas) que guía el material hacia una red, donde las capas y niveles se superponen y se mezclan. Pero no solo la materia está implicada en el hecho de tejer, sino que el acto va más allá de una cuestión puramente material. El ritmo del tramado conduce a una serie de historias, oralidades, herencias y conocimientos compartidos entre generaciones. La labor, lo social, el ocio, el género, lo que está arriba y lo que está abajo, se mezclan de distintas maneras en este conjunto de obras: de la acción de tejer utilizando fibras naturales al uso de técnicas de impresión fotográfica.

Sandra Monterroso, has one piece in that exhibition: 𝘈𝘣𝘶𝘦𝘭𝘢 𝘚𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘦. 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢 𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘴 (𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳. 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘞𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴). This piece was created by her during her residency at dc foundation in 2022. The piece is based on the book “Aspectos de la medicina popular en el área rural de Guatemala” (Aspects of Popular Medicine in Guatemala’s Rural Area) [1978], a recipe book to cure wounds in different Mayan cultures. Back then, the book’s narrative was an invitation to approach this knowledge far from a folkloric view favoring a more scientific approximation since the book is a compendium of animals, insects, stones, plants, rituals, and other aspects juxtaposed in an invitation to heal wounds: internals, ancestral, corporeal, spirituals, etc.

La obra se basa en el libro “Aspectos de la medicina popular en el área rural de Guatemala” (1978), un recetario para sanar heridas dentro de distintas culturas mayas. La narrativa del libro en aquel entonces ya hacía una invitación para acercarse a estos otros conocimientos lejos de una mirada folklórica a una más científica, ya que el libro es una recopilación de datos de animales, insectos, piedras, plantas, rituales y otros aspectos se yuxtaponen en una invitación para sanar heridas: internas, ancestrales, corpóreas, espirituales, etc.

Thrilled to be part of the coming exhibition at Maison de l'Amérique Latine Paris "Histoires de fils".

The exhibition brings together artists from several generations (the oldest appeared on the art scene in the 1950s/60s), whose works focus on thread, weaving and knotting, while using a variety of materials: textiles but also plant and metal.

Please save the date for the opening of our 2024 - 2025 exhibition Mud + Corn + Stone + Blue, which opens on August 29th with a public reception. We are delighted to be working with more than 20 artists from the U.S. and Central America on this major project, produced in collaboration with Independent Curators International of New York, and curated by Dr. Laura Augusta.

Beginning with the U.S. Farm Crisis of the 1970s, Mud + Corn + Stone + Blue traces the experiences of farming—specifically of small-scale, family farms—in relation to the U.S. foreign policy in Central America during the 1980s. This exhibition weaves a story of agriculture and political intervention, as told through the eyes of artists from the Great Plains in the U.S., Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.

Mud + Corn + Stone + Blue is a traveling exhibition curated by Laura Augusta, PhD. It is produced by Independent Curators International (ICI), New York in collaboration with the Stanlee & Gerald Rubin Center for Visual Arts at The University of Texas at El Paso. Mud + Corn + Stone + Blue is made possible with the generous support of ICI’s Board of Trustees and International Forum and The Andy Warhol Foundation.

Y especialmente a la galería Sicardi / Ayers / Bacino y su equipo por el trabajo increíble que hacen por los artistas latinos y por creer en mi trabajo artístico.

Zielinsky Barcelona se complace en presentar “La herida, la venda, la cura”, una exposición individual de Sandra Monterroso (1974, Ciudad de Guatemala) en el marco del Barcelona Gallery Weekend. Monterroso ha desarrollado una práctica artística en la que se compromete por restaurar su herencia cultural y ancestral como artista Maya. Su investigación toma conciencia tanto de la realidad política actual como de la historia de las violencias en Guatemala –racial, social y de género–, bien cómo de las estructuras de poder heredadas del colonialismo para, desde un conocimiento situado, “sanar las heridas coloniales por medio del arte y de los rituales Mayas y de otras culturas”.

Zielinsky Barcelona is pleased to present “The wound, the bandage, the cure”, an individual exhibition by Sandra Monterroso (1974, Guatemala City) within the framework of the Barcelona Gallery Weekend. Monterroso has developed an artistic practice in which she is committed to restoring her cultural and ancestral heritage as a Mayan artist. Her research becomes aware of both the current political reality and the history of violence in Guatemala – racial, social and gender – as well as the power structures inherited from colonialism to, from a situated knowledge, “heal the colonial wounds. through Mayan art and rituals and other cultures.”

La obra de Sandra Monterroso se expone en la Galería de Arte Gardiner de la Universidad Estatal de Oklahoma, en la exposición Mᴏᴅᴏs ᴅᴇ ᴠᴇʀ | Wᴀʏs ᴏғ Sᴇɪɴɢ, que presenta el trabajo de ocho artistas multigeneracionales cuyas obras hablan de la herencia prehispánica y colonial a la vez que hacen referencia a diferentes migraciones en y desde América Latina.

La exposición fue co-curada por Silvia Benedetti, historiadora del arte, curadora y escritora venezolana radicada en Nueva York, y Lindsay Aveilhé, Directora de la Galería Gardiner.

Sandra Monterrosos’s work is on display at The Gardiner Gallery of Art at Oklahoma State University, in the exhibition Mᴏᴅᴏs ᴅᴇ ᴠᴇʀ | Wᴀʏs ᴏғ Sᴇᴇɪɴɢ, which showcases the work of eight multigenerational artists whose artworks speak to prehispanic and colonial heritage while referring to different migrations in and from Latin America.

The exhibition is co-curated by Silvia Benedetti, a Venezuelan New York-based art historian, curator and writer and Lindsay Aveilhé, Director of the Gardiner Gallery.
